Food is Free!

If food is a basic right, why then do we have to buy it?

Let's not go down to the story of how we arrived at our current economic system. It's kinda overwhelming to discuss it in detail. I am not saying that we can automatically stop buying food. But one thing is sure though. People are starting to question the basic premises of how we've built our entire lives and communities.

I found this really cool project on Facebook called Food is Free which is also became a Non-profit organization in 2012. The movement started in a single front yard and grew to inspire neighborhoods and other cities. Not only was food made available for free, the project also promoted a sense of connection and community.

I don't know about you, but growing up in a largely rural setting, I know that this idea has been around for a while in the Filipino culture. Everyone remembers the folk song Bahay Kubo, right? Gardening at home or school used to be so cool until people decided that kids should focus more on reading, science and math projects (so forget about gardening and cleaning). Even public schools these days hire people to do chores we used to enjoy.

I guess, we can always go back and find it in ourselves to start doing our Food is Free gardens now. A quick start-up guide can be found here. To give you an idea of what the project feels like, watch the video below.
